We have had a lot of fun celebrating spirit days this past week. Check out our classroom best dressed below. Our teachers even joined in on the holiday spirit.
Our third grade was invited to sing at the Freedom Center today to commemorate September 11th. We joined thousands of other voices across the country singing the National Anthem at the same time. Together we set a Guinness Book World Record by having the most elementary students singing the National Anthem at the same time. We also enjoyed a guided tour of the center and learned about the Underground Railroad.
Fifth graders running for student council positions gave their speeches today. Good luck to all the candidates as voting begins tomorrow.
Teacher Spotlight is a new series we will be starting on our school blog. The goal is to highlight the great teaching going on at our school and allow others the opportunity to see it. Throughout the school year, we will be highlighting different teachers, grade levels and subject areas. Mrs. Mann uses Daily 5 Literacy during her Reading/Language Arts block. The video below shows snippets of her class during their Daily 5 rotation. Mrs. Mann begins with all the students seated at the carpet. She takes about 5 - 10 minutes to introduce and model the learning target for the day. Then, the students go into their Daily 5 which includes Read to Someone, Read to Self, Listen to Reading, Teacher Table, and Word Work and Work on Writing. Each student has a book bag where they keep their "Good Fit" books and strategy charts. The strategy charts consist of a paper with post-its. The post-its each contain a strategy that Mrs. Mann has conferenced with them about and encouraged them to practice during their reading. The strategies include reading the front and back cover of the book to get clues about the story, chunking words, etc. The students will spend approximately 20 minutes in their Daily 5 center. After the first round, the students will go back to the carpet and go over what they learned or discuss how they practiced or used the learning target. They will do this for 4 rounds.
